Headquarters, Northwest African Strategic Air Force, General Orders No. 121 (June 26, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Wilbert R. Welch (ASN: 16051765), United States Army Air Forces, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as an Aerial Gunner of an A-20 Havoc Bomber in the 84th Bombardment Squadron, 47th Bombardment Group (Light), TWELFTH Air Force, in aerial operations in the North Africa Theater of Operations, on 30 March 1943. Sergeant Welch displayed exemplary conduct during a mission over the enemy airdrome at La Fauconnerie. Encountering intense anti-aircraft fire, his plane sustained many direct hits and Sergeant Welch was wounded six times in the back and legs by bursts of flak and enemy fighter plane fire. The light bomber crashed in flames but Sergeant Welch steadfastly remained at his guns even after the landing and repulsed an enemy fighter which continued to strafe his plane and crew. When the aircraft had been driven off by Sergeant Welch’s fire, he again disregarded danger and intense suffering to aid other crew members in extricating the bombardier who had been trapped in the nose of the blazing plane. His gallantry and self-denial were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Forces.
