The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Wesley E. Ballard (ASN: 01311360), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 July 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. On that date Captain Ballard was assigned the mission of commanding operations on “Check Point Easy”, a strategic friendly observation post near Hill 266. As Captain Ballard assumed command, the friendly unit was undergoing a severe enemy artillery and mortar barrage. So devastating was the fire that the friendly forces were in danger of annihilation. Captain Ballard, realizing the graveness of the situation, unhesitatingly moved out and about the fire swept area, exposing himself to direct enemy observation and fire shouting words of encouragement and reassembling his men to repel the forthcoming enemy attack. Upon setting up the defensive position, he concentrated fully on comforting and preparing the evacuation of the wounded. Through his tenacity and brilliant leadership during this critical situation, the enemy once again were repulsed and the vital friendly position was held. The consummate devotion to duty displayed by Captain Ballard reflects great credit upon himself and the military.
