The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Russell J. Bales (ASN: RA-19380098), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date during the attack on an enemy-held terrain feature, friendly units encountered heavy enemy resistance. Despite the intense hostile fire, Sergeant Bales, with complete disregard for his personal safety, led his squad in a vicious assault using marching fire and grenades, driving the enemy from his position. Though seriously wounded, he remained with his men to direct them against an enemy counterattack and continued this courageous action until the enemy was disorganized. He then led his men in pursuit of the retreating hostile force, inflicting numerous casualties upon him. His disregard for personal safety and inspiring leadership were highly responsible for the success of his unit’s mission. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Bales on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
