The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant William Walter Moffitt (ASN: 0-5348191), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company C, 2d Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. On 15 May 1968, Lieutenant Moffitt’s unit was called upon to reinforce a company engaged in a fierce battle. When he arrived at the area of contact, the friendly force was beleaguered by well-fortified enemy positions and unable to remove their casualties. Lieutenant Moffitt immediately deployed his men to advantageous firing locations. Realizing that one hostile bunker held a commanding view and was completely halting all progress, he and two comrades began moving around their unit’s flank toward the insurgents’ entrenchment. Crawling through water filled trenches, they approached several friendly wounded men lying exposed to enemy fire raking the area. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Lieutenant Moffitt maneuvered through the hail of hostile rounds and administered first aid to the casualties. After he was certain that all the injured soldiers in the area had been treated and evacuated, he continued his mission. Lieutenant Moffitt crawled to within 30 meters of the insurgents’ position and threw two hand grenades at the enemy’s fortifications. Knowing he must move closer to the positions, he maneuvered forward 20 meters and threw two more grenades inside the bunker, killing two occupants. His exemplary courage, initiative, and bold determination significantly contributed to the successful outcome of the encounter. Second Lieutenant Moffitt’s unquestionable valor in close combat against numerically superior hostile forces is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
