Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 1077 (July 17, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Woodrow W. Baldwin (ASN: 6958219), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 13 and 15 March 1944. When an enemy grenade exploded in his pillbox, killing one and wounding two occupants, Staff Sergeant Baldwin boldly carried one and assisted the other disabled soldier across fire-swept terrain to the safety of another pillbox. Subsequently, when an enemy machine gun threatened their position, Staff Sergeant Baldwin crawled to within a few yards of it and silenced the weapon with accurate fire from his automatic rifle. Later count revealed that twenty Japanese had been killed in the position. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Baldwin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
