Baldwin (ASN: RA-16298432), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 7 February 1951, near Sinhyon-ni, Korea, the recoilless rifle platoon, to which Sergeant Baldwin was attached, became subjected to heavy enemy small arms and mortar fire. During the ensuing action, Sergeant Baldwin, seeing that one of the men of the unit was wounded, voluntarily left the cover of his foxhole and went to the aid of the injured man. Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 238 (June 30, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Richard N. Baldwin (ASN: RA-16298432), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 December 1950, in the vicinity of Huksu-ri, Korea, Sergeant Baldwin, attached as an aid man to a rifle squad, took charge voluntarily in the absence of the platoon leader. Directing their fire, he maintained a position and served efficiently until the platoon sergeant arrived. He also continued to aid the wounded, moving about in exposed positions, attending and transporting them to places of relative safety. In the performance of duty, Sergeant Baldwin’s carbine was blown to bits in his hands and he received shrapnel wounds. Despite his injuries, he carried on his work, which contributed materially in preventing the disorganization of the squad and the possible deaths of the wounded. The gallant and courageous devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Baldwin reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
