The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Warren D. Baker (ASN: RA-6951279), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Company, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 2 September 1950 in the vicinity of Hyonpung, Korea. On the morning of this date Sergeant Baker, platoon sergeant of an intelligence and reconnaissance platoon was given the mission of reinforcing the defense of a Battalion Command Post against hostile forces which had broken through friendly positions and were attacking the battalion command group of twelve men around a hill to the south of the enemy. While they were crossing a piece of high ground an enemy machine gun opened fire from a distance of 25 yards in front of the group. Sergeant Baker dropped to the ground, threw two grenades and, without a moment’s hesitation, led his men in a charge on the position, killing its crew and destroying the machine gun. The destruction of this machine gun allowed him to lead his men over a 300 foot hill, thereby reaching the rear of the enemy. From this position Sergeant Baker, although fully exposed to the enemy, led his men in another attack which resulted in 22 enemy killed, 12 captured and the destruction of two more hostile machine guns. His superior leadership and daring actions resulted in securing the hill and wiping out the hostile threat from that direction and saving the command post. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Baker on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and is in keeping with the high traditions of the military service.
