The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class Samuel E. Baker (ASN: RA-20840570), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 August 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. Company A’s hill position was attacked by strong hostile forces and during the engagement Sergeant Baker led his rifle squad down the forward slope in order to protect the right flank. Exposing himself to the constant and deadly enemy machine gun fire, he led a counterattack against a group of enemy who were attempting to envelop the company. In his furious charge he killed or wounded eight enemy and effectively eliminated the threat of enemy encirclement. Later, the platoon leader was wounded and Sergeant Baker assumed command of the platoon, forcefully and skillfully leading it in its continued and eventually successful defense of the perimeter. The gallantry and inspirational leadership demonstrated by Sergeant Baker reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
