Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 21 (January 11, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Jimmie Baker (ASN: RA-14372625), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 7 September 1951, a hostile force of estimated battalion strength using mortars, automatic weapons, rifles, and grenades, attacked Company L’s defensive positions on Hill 284, near Chorwon, Korea. Although sustaining heavy losses, the enemy succeeded in penetrating the unit’s perimeter and inflicting some casualties upon the friendly troops. Sergeant Baker, the Second Platoon medical aidman, upon learning of friendly casualties, unhesitatingly left a relatively safe position near the command post and fearlessly moved about the rough embattled terrain until he located four severely wounded men. Remaining there three hours, he alternately treated the wounded and assisted in repelling enemy attacks as the battle raged furiously around the position. Sergeant Baker’s inspiring gallantry and selfless regard for the welfare of his stricken comrades reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
