The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Private Jesse J. Baker (ASN: 38447910), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 1511th Engineer Water Supply Company. On 17 May 1945, near Regensburg, Germany, Private Baker dove into the treacherous and swiftly moving Danube River in an attempt to save a drowning comrade. He dove repeatedly for the drowning man and battled the strong current until completely exhausted and forced to swim to shore to save himself. Private Baker’s heroic, unselfish actions reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
