Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 5 (January 6, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Ford G. Bailey (ASN: 0-2262327), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Won-ni, Korea. On that date Lieutenant Bailey was a member of a division convoy that was proceeding from Won-ni to Suchon. The convoy was suddenly subjected to intense machine gun and automatic weapons fire from a large enemy force which was well-entrenched on commanding ground on both sides of the road. The heavy hostile fire caused numerous casualties and forced the convoy to halt and its members to take cover in ditches along the road. Moving through the intense fire sweeping the road, Lieutenant Bailey organized an attacking force of sixty men and led them in a daring charge up one slope. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he continued his intrepid advance, inspiring his men by his coolness under the heavy enemy fire. Under his skillful leadership his force succeeded in destroying four enemy machine gun positions and killing numerous enemy soldiers. After the enemy had been eliminated, he aided several of his wounded men to safety. Through his intrepid actions, initiative and inspirational leadership the hostile road block was shattered, permitting the convoy to proceed in safety without sustaining more serious casualties. The gallantry and high devotion to duty displayed on this occasion by Lieutenant Bailey reflect great credit upon himself and are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
