The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Henry C. Bagley (ASN: RA-6955918), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 13 April 1951, in the vicinity of Hwachon Reservoir, Korea. On that date he was a platoon sergeant in an infantry company that had the mission to attack and secure enemy-held positions on Hill 1031. After several attempts to take the hill failed the unit was forced to withdraw. Sergeant Bagley immediately volunteered to lead a group of men against four strategically placed enemy machine guns that were holding up the advance of his unit. Without regard for his personal safety he aggressively led the attack, throwing hand grenades and employing a tremendous amount of fire that destroyed completely the four enemy machine gun emplacements and fourteen riflemen. He personally accounted for one enemy machine gun and its crew. The gallant leadership displayed by Sergeant Bagley reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
