The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Corporal Albert E. Baggs (ASN: 31354231), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 509th Military Police Battalion, on 27 November 1944, in Belgium. When an enemy bomb struck a house and trapped a number of civilians in the basement, Corporal Baggs, upon observing a heavy brick wall about to collapse, placed a piece of timber against the wall and supported it with his body while other rescuers extricated eight persons from the wreckage. Upon the completion of the rescue, Corporal Baggs released the pressure upon the wall and it collapsed a short while later. By his heroic actions, Corporal Baggs assisted materially in saving the lives of eight persons, thus reflecting credit upon himself.
