Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 122 (March 2, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Joseph E. Badger (ASN: 0-2021238), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On that date, Company E had the mission of assaulting and securing Hill 1005 which was defended by a numerically superior hostile force. Lieutenant Badger, a platoon leader, skillfully maneuvered his men while leading them in routing the hostile forces from their positions. After inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy the platoon succeeded in reaching the ridgeline, only to be forced back by an enemy counterattack. Quickly reorganizing his men, Lieutenant Badger rallied them in a renewed assault. During this second action he was stunned by the impact of a concussion grenade. After regaining consciousness, he rejoined his platoon which had lagged without his leadership, and inspired the men to their former efficiency. After inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy, the unit took, and held, Hill 1005. Lieutenant Badger’s valor was outstanding on the field of battle where bravery was common and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
