Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 69 (March 30, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Richard L. Bacon (ASN: RA-13331196), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 1 January 1951 in the vicinity of Hoengsong, Korea. After securing high ground, Company G’s defensive perimeter was counterattacked by a large enemy force. Private Bacon, in order to place more effective fire upon the enemy, moved his Browning Automatic Rifle to an exposed position from where he had an excellent field of fire. Remaining fearlessly in this extremely exposed position, he engaged and destroyed an enemy machine gun which was sweeping his company with intense fire. While in this exposed position, he was struck and killed by hostile fire. The gallantry displayed by Private Bacon reflects the highest great upon himself is in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
