The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant John J. Fackler (ASN: 0-1822121), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Service Battery, 159th Field Artillery Battalion, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 8 August 1950, when he arrived at the gun positions near Chindong-ni, Korea, to investigate the status of ammunition, an enemy attack hit the battery position. Captain Fackler immediately assisted in the organization of the position. Heedless of he hostile small arms, machine gun and mortar fire concentrated on the area, he directed machine gun fire at the attacking force until he was seriously wounded. Captain Fackler’s exemplary courage and outstanding leadership were an inspiration to the men and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
