Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 754 (November 23, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class [then Sergeant] Myron C. Auer (ASN: US-55060953), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 September 1951 in the vicinity of Tally’ong, Korea. On that date Company E was given the mission of assaulting and securing a strategic hill defended by a determined and well-entrenched enemy force. Sergeant Auer, platoon sergeant, led his unit in the attack, completely disregarding the intense enemy fire. Although wounded he continued to lead his men, inspiring them with his personal bravery, until he lost vision of his left eye. Refusing to be evacuated he remained to direct the supply of ammunition to the advancing troops. Despite his handicap and ignoring his wounds he continued in this courageous manner until the objective was successfully secured. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Auer on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
