Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 270 (July 11, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) William F. Attison (ASN: 0-2016385), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Tank Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 22 May 1951, near Habae-jae, Korea, Lieutenant Attison was in command of a tank-infantry task force spearheading a drive on that town, with the mission of supporting infantry elements blocking an enemy advance. While proceeding along a road leading toward the objective, the column became subjected to heavy enemy fire from well-entrenched and camouflaged enemy positions in the area bordering on the road. Several infantrymen riding on the tanks were wounded and realizing the seriousness of their wounds, Lieutenant Attison boldly dismounted from his tank, and walking back and forth throughout the column, supervised and assisted their evacuation. Shortly after the wounded had been taken care of, the task force came to a halt. Again dismounting in face of the incessant enemy barrage, Lieutenant Attison proceeded on foot to the forward infantry elements in order to learn the exact enemy positions which enabled him to place the accurate and devastating fire power of the armored vehicles on the enemy inflicting many casualties. Lieutenant Attison’s gallant and aggressive performance of duty reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
