Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 149 (June 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Master Sergeant Orman R. Atkins (ASN: RA-6395415), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of 2d Reconnaissance Company, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 February 1951, at Chuam-Ni, Korea. On that date the 2d Reconnaissance Company was attacked by a numerically superior enemy. Sergeant Atkins directed his platoon in action against the enemy, at the same time directing the fire of his 75-mm. tank gun and firing the .50 caliber machine gun, inflicting heavy casualties upon the enemy. When his tank was disabled by enemy mortar fire, Sergeant Atkins reorganized his platoon and kept the morale of men up by his inspiring actions and gave them confidence by remaining cool throughout the action. Sergeant Atkins supervised the evacuation of the wounded and organized an orderly withdrawal. As a result of his courageous actions, many casualties were inflicted upon the enemy and the lives of many wounded were saved. The gallantry displayed by Sergeant Atkins reflect great credit on himself and the military service.
