Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 292 (August 24, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert R. Atchison (ASN: RA-12363840), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 14 August 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, Korea. On that date Corporal Atchison was a member of a company sized combat raiding party, acting as Forward Observer. As the party reached the crest of Hill 252, they were ambushed by a large enemy force, firing small arms, automatic weapons and mortars. During this action, Corporal Atchison, with utter disregard for his personal safety, directed supporting mortar fire on the enemy positions. Amid the withering machine gun fire, Corporal Atchison showed a valiant display of courage and heroism by helping reorganize our forces, recovering equipment, and aiding the wounded. When the raiding party was forced to return to friendly lines, he carried back a seriously wounded soldier over treacherous terrain, thereby saving the man’s life. The gallantry in action displayed by Corporal Atchison reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
