The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Howard Ashworth (ASN: RA-18352435), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 28 August 1951 in the vicinity of Pudul-kogae, Korea. On this date Private Ashworth was a member of a 75-mm. recoilless rifle platoon which made up the forward security outpost for the 81-mm. mortar platoon. The outpost was suddenly attacked by an enemy patrol using automatic weapons and grenades. While engaged in a fire fight, one of the men from the outpost was wounded by grenade fragments. Private Ashworth, completely disregarding his personal safety and the intense enemy fire, immediately left his position to help his wounded comrade. Reaching the wounded man, he administered medical aid and assisted him to a sheltered position. Returning over the same route through the intense enemy fire to his own fox hole, Private Ashworth rejoined his comrades in repulsing the enemy attack. The gallantry and outstanding devotion to duty and comrades displayed by Private Ashworth reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
