Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 524 (November 19, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Marvin L. Ashby (ASN: ER-15419181), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 September 1951, Company B assaulted Hill 487 which was well defended by a strongly armed and fanatically determined enemy force. This strong opposition caused the company’s advance to lag and Private Ashby, an assistant squad leader of the Third Platoon, realized that immediate action was mandatory. Crawling aggressively forward through the hazardous area, he began making his way around the enemy’s flank and when he was within 10 yards of an enemy bunker, Private Ashby charged the emplacement, surprising the occupants, killing three, and silencing a machine gun. He then relentlessly and single-handedly assaulted a second position killing and wounding the enemy soldiers in it before being injured by the blast of a hostile automatic weapon. Private Ashby’s surprise attack caught the foe off guard and threw them in such a state of disorder that the company was able to seize the tactically important area with a minimum of casualties. The gallant and courageous contribution which Private Ashby made to the successful completion of his units mission reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
