The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Frank G. Ashby (ASN: 0-419031), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 29 September 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, friendly troops holding Hill 487 became in need of reinforcement. For this purpose, Company G moved forward, but, in doing so, was subjected to a heavy enemy artillery and mortar barrage. This action occurred in the vicinity of Major Ashby’s observation post, and seeing the confusion resulting from the bombardment, he voluntarily proceeded to reorganize the company amid the incessant enemy fire. He then quickly led the company out of the danger area to the objective where he directed the rapid and thorough establishment of defenses that enabled the unit to repel three hostile counterattacks during the night and remain in full possession of the objective the following day. The gallant leadership and fearless courage exhibited by Major Ashby reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
