Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 420 (November 7, 1952), Amended by General Orders No. 448 (November 26, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant William Milton Arnold, Jr. (ASN: RA-11218367), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 26 and 27 September 1952 in the vicinity of Chorwon, North Korea. On those dates, Sergeant Arnold was a platoon sergeant of the 23rd Infantry Regiment “Raider Platoon” whose mission was to make contact with the enemy behind enemy lines, attack their positions and take a prisoner. As the friendly unit neared the objective, they were suddenly subjected to the intense enemy grenade and automatic weapons fire. Realizing the seriousness of the situation and with complete disregard for personal safety, Sergeant Arnold made a daring one-man assault on the hostile emplacements. During this fire fight, when the order was given to withdraw, Sergeant Arnold, although seriously wounded, insisted that the other wounded be evacuated first. The actions performed by Sergeant Arnold served as a tremendous inspiration to all who observed him and was responsible for the successful withdrawal of his unit with the minimum of friendly casualties. The outstanding gallantry displayed by Sergeant Arnold and the willingness to forfeit his life for the lives of his comrades, reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
