Headquarters, 24th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 313 (April 12, 1951)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Lieutenant Colonel (Field Artillery) Marshall H. Armor, Jr. (ASN: 0-45590), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 52d Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AW) Battalion (SP), 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Sojon-ni, Korea, on 6 February 1951. When the Third Battalion of the 21st Infantry Regiment launched an attack against a hill occupied by an estimated enemy regiment the attack was slowed by heavy mortar, automatic weapons, and small arms fire. Observing that the friendly assaulting force were greatly outnumbered by the defending enemy he realized that the success of the operation depended on the accuracy of the supporting artillery fire. With complete disregard for personal safety, he voluntarily exposed himself to the intense enemy fire and moved forward to a vantage point within 200 yards of the enemy positions. From this exposed position, with enemy small arms fire striking all about him, he calmly directed the placing of accurate concentrations of artillery fire upon the enemy positions. His directed artillery fire paced the infantry’s advance up the hill, inflicting severe casualties on the enemy troops and resulted in their being driven from their positions. His aggressiveness and accurate direction of artillery fire were directly responsible for inflicting the most severe casualties on the enemy and largely responsible for the successful completion of the mission. Lieutenant Colonel Armor’s gallant actions reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Army Artillery.
