Headquarters, 7th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 467 (October 26, 1951)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Donald H. Arends, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Sindok, Korea. On 4 June 1951, Corporal Arends’ platoon was assaulting a heavily-defended strategic hill when a sudden and ferocious barrage of enemy small-arms and automatic weapons fire pinned down the unit. Observing that the source of the heavy enemy fire was from a bunker located to the front, Corporal Arends, with complete for his personal safety, charged up the hill toward the bunker firing his automatic rifle at a rapid rate. Reaching the enemy bunker, his ammunition supply became exhausted and he continued the assault with a pistol and grenades and killed the occupants of the emplacement. The prompt and intrepid action of Corporal Arends reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
