    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Wendel T. Archibald (ASN: 19010716), United States Army, for gallantry in action at Fort Mills, Corregidor, Phi, on or about 4 May 1942. When two of his comrades were hit and severely wounded during a heavy enemy artillery bombardment of Fort Mills, Private Archibald, Battery L, 60th Coast Artillery (Anti-Aircraft) Artillery Regiment, left his position of safety to go to their relief. Exposed to constant danger from flying shell fragments, he searched the area and found a truck in which he placed two men. He then drove the helpless soldiers through a heavy artillery barrage to the Malinta Tunnel Hospital for treatment. By his gallant deed is rescuing his wounded comrades, Private Archibald upheld the finest traditions of the American Soldier.
