Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 49 (February 24, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Joseph J. Andrew (ASN: RA-16254222), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 30 November 1950 in the vicinity of Kunu-ri, Korea. A numerically superior enemy force attacked his company and succeeded in overrunning a portion of the defensive positions, cutting off and trapping four men. The remainder of the company, having lost most of their leaders because of the initial intensity of the hostile fire, became confused and disorganized. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private Andrew, a rifleman, on his own initiative and exhibiting superior qualities of leadership, rallied his scattered and disheartened comrades. He then launched and led an attack in the face of heavy enemy fire in his efforts to get through to the trapped men. After successfully rescuing the trapped soldiers, he fought his way back to the company’s lines under heavy machine gun fire. One of the men fell wounded and, while aiding him, Private Andrew was struck by enemy fire and killed. The gallantry and outstanding leadership displayed by Private Andrew reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
