The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert G. Baird (ASN: 37256016), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in action on 13 September 1944 in the vicinity of Uckange, France. During the attack on the town, installation of communication lines became mandatory between a forward battalion command post and the regiment. Sergeant Baird, Wire Section Chief, with aid of a companion, subjected himself to intermittent enemy fire, located the battalion command post and successfully laid the wire. He then established communications between rifle companies. His intrepid action and devotion to duty greatly facilitated the success of the Battalion’s mission Sergeant Baird’s gallantry was in accordance with high military tradition.
