Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 51 (February 18, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Sterling O. Anderson (ASN: ER-17249952), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 December 1950, in the vicinity of Huksu-ri, Korea, Corporal Anderson and another man volunteered to reconnoiter for a withdrawal route which would permit his platoon, which had been cut off from the main force by a determined enemy, to withdraw. Corporal Anderson and his comrade began their dangerous mission and were crawling over rugged open terrain through snow and ice when the enemy concentrated deadly fire upon them. After his companion was seriously wounded Corporal Anderson continued on despite the hail of fire striking around him. Upon reaching his objective, he returned the enemy fire drawing the attention of the enemy to himself. The platoon withdrew by the same route while Corporal Anderson continued to draw fire upon himself. His courage, initiative, and devotion to duty on this occasion were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
