Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 600 (October 13, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal [then Private First Class] James D. Anderson (ASN: US-55105221), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 September 1951 in the vicinity of Mandae-ri, Korea. On this date, while Company B was attacking a strongly fortified enemy-held hill, the unit was pinned down by intense enemy small arms and automatic weapons fire. With the machine gun ammunition expended, Corporal Anderson, realizing the need for effective covering fire while the unit withdrew, voluntarily remained behind with his automatic rifle and grenades. He remained in his position, despite intense enemy fire and when his rifle ammunition had expended he threw hand grenades to hold off the advancing hostile forces. In the meantime the company had reorganized and during its advance, Corporal Anderson rejoined the unit and led his squad in the attack. His courageous actions were directly responsible for the successful reorganization and assault of his company and undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades. The gallantry in action demonstrated by Corporal Anderson reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
