Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, General Orders No. 1814 (1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Darrell Eugene Anderson (ASN: RA-27384960), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Staff Sergeant Anderson distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 24 March 1969 while serving as Heavy Weapons Infantry Advisor, Mobile Advisory Team IV-49, Advisory Team 71, Delta Military Assistance Command, United States Army Advisory Group, IV Corps Tactical Zone, United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. On that date, the Tam Soc Operating Base came under intense mortar, automatic weapons and small arms fire from two directions by an estimated force of two Viet Cong companies. Sergeant Anderson immediately left his position inside the team house and ran to a mortar pit under a barrage of hostile fire to more effectively direct and coordinate defenses. After reaching the mortar pit, Sergeant Anderson began delivering heavy mortar fire upon the attacking enemy. Despite the overwhelming enemy force, he remained in this open position, valiantly and courageously fighting the enemy, in defense of the allied position. Staff Sergeant Anderson’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
