The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade [then Private First Class] Arthur V. Anderson (ASN: 37163215), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 17 March 1944. Technician Fourth Grade Anderson volunteered to undertake the hazardous mission of reporting by radio the progress of a tank-led attack on enemy positions. With a thirty-eight pound radio strapped to his back, he took his position behind the lead tank and followed it into the battle. His lucid description of the obstacles faced and overcome as the assault progressed was of invaluable assistance to the battalion commander in keeping informed of the combat action; thus enabling him more efficiently to direct his troops. Although an excellent target for hostile machine gunners and snipers, Technician Fourth Grade Anderson never hesitated in his mission. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fourth Grade Anderson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
