The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Enrique C. Ancheta (ASN: US-50000319), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company I, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 March 1951, in the vicinity of Chang-gum-ni, Korea. On that date he was a member of a platoon of Company I which was being threatened with encirclement by a numerically superior enemy force. During the battle which ensued a great number of casualties were suffered by the unit, and the unit was forced to withdraw, leaving behind the wounded and dead. Corporal Ancheta, without regard for his personal safety, exposed himself to heavy machine gun, small arms, and mortar fire in order to return the wounded to safety and recover the dead. The gallant conduct displayed by Corporal Ancheta reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
