The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Carlos F. Ancheta (ASN: 0-1316979), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, from 11 August 1950 through 14 August 1950 in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. On the evening of 11 August 1950, Lieutenant Ancheta was in command of the 9th Infantry Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon, with the mission of seeking, engaging in combat, and holding the enemy known to be advancing up a road into the rear of the 9th Infantry, in the vicinity of Yongsan, Korea. During the more scattered sniper fire that was encountered at the point where contact was expected to be made, the platoon met heavy machine gun and small arms fire, and immediately returned this fire, some of the patrol being mounted and some dismounted. Lieutenant Ancheta remained behind to insure that all of his men reached the new positions safely, and in so doing, was himself cut off by the enemy, wounded and captured. After being held prisoner for three days, Lieutenant Ancheta made good his escape from the enemy and returned to his unit dressed in enemy uniform risking death both from the enemy and friendly troops. Although wounded, Lieutenant Ancheta made detailed reports to his commanding officer concerning enemy tactics of infiltration, weapons, supply and tactical disposition, before allowing himself to be evacuated for medical treatment. Lieutenant Ancheta’s gallant action on this occasion reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
