The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frank J. Amezcua (ASN: RA-18366541), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 October 1951 in the vicinity of Tondul, Korea. On that date while engaged in a fierce encounter with a numerically superior enemy force, Company E was subjected to intense hostile fire. Continuous machine gun fire from several hostile emplacements had the company pinned down and threatened to eliminate it. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Private Amezcua courageously braved the enemy fire in an attempt to destroy the bunkers. In doing so he was seriously wounded, but continued toward his objective. Although suffering great pain, he assaulted the hostile machine gun emplacements and succeeded in destroying them with hand grenades while inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. With the elimination of the menacing weapons, his unit was able to continue its mission and successfully rout the enemy from his position. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Private Amezcua reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
