Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 391 (August 3, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant First Class John A. Ambrose (ASN: RA-32386474), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company H, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 18 May 1951, in the vicinity of Chaun-ni, Korea. On that date he was leading a machine gun section in support of a rifle company engaged in a fierce fire fight with a numerically superior enemy force. The enemy forced Company H to withdraw and threatened to overrun other friendly units. Realizing the seriousness of the situation and unmindful of a painful wound he received at the outset of this action, Sergeant Ambrose skillfully deployed his section, directing and leading them in effecting accurate fire which inflicted heavy casualties and slows the attack. With the resumption of the enemy’s fanatical attacks, Sergeant Ambrose ordered his section to withdraw while he remained behind to cover. Before leaving his position, he destroyed his machine guns so as to deny their use to the enemy. The gallant conduct displayed by Sergeant Ambrose on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
