The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Newton Alvey (ASN: RA-16304305), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action on 3 August 1950, in Korea. On this date the unit was in position defending a pass five miles north of Haman, Korea. Private Alvey, squad leader, 1st Squad, 1st Platoon, was in position on the left flank of the platoon. An enemy attack outflanked Private Alvey’s position and brought him under direct machine gun fire. Private Alvey remained in position and returned the fire after all his men except one had been killed or wounded. Private Alvey assisted the evacuation of the wounded while repulsing repeated attacks from the enemy with is automatic rifle over a period of several hours. His individual courage and skill delayed the enemy advance until reinforcements arrived to consolidate the position and repulse the enemy attacks. The gallantry displayed by Private Alvey on this occasion reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
