The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Louis B. Alston (ASN: RA-14352450), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 22 November 1951, Sergeant Alston, acting platoon sergeant of the Second Platoon, was directing his unit in the holding of right flank defensive positions on Hill 200, near Huksok-Tong, Korea, when he observed a reinforced squad of hostile troops approaching. Realizing that his men could not place effective fire upon the enemy due to unfavorable terrain, he left a position of comparative safety, and, advanced toward the foe until he was within hand grenade range. Fearlessly remaining in an exposed position, Sergeant Alston began hurling numerous grenades upon the enemy troops, accurately timing the missiles for maximum air burst effect. Although severely cut on the hand while making the attack, he steadfastly refused to withdraw for medical attention, personally accounting for five enemy dead and numerous wounded. Acting valorously and voluntarily, he single-handedly repulsed the foe without casualties or loss of positions to friendly troops. The exemplary gallantry and inspiring initiative displayed by Sergeant Alston reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
