The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Leslie Eugene Alston (ASN: RA-14365439), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters Battery [then Battery B], 503d Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 13 to 15 February 1951, in the vicinity of Chipyong-ni, Korea. Private Alston was assigned as jeep driver for the Forward Observer of his battery when it came under fanatical attack by numerically superior enemy forces. When the attack first came, the infantry lines were hit hard, and Private Alston, without regard for his personal life and safety, and under intense enemy small arms, automatic weapons and machine gun fire and rocket and mortar shelling, personally aided in replacing damaged machine guns, placing them in position and distributing ammunition to the personnel. On several occasions Private Alston, under intense enemy machine gun cross-fire, carried wounded personnel to the Battalion Medical Aid Station and further drove a three-quarter ton weapons carrier through intense enemy automatic weapons fire to evacuate wounded personnel to the hospital area. Such gallantry on the part of Private Alston reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
