The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant James E. Wilson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 45th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Italy on 22 December 1943. While serving as a Machinegun Corporal, he was supporting an Infantry rifle company which was attacking a hill strongly fortified by the enemy. During the attack the enemy launched a heavy counterattack, causing several casualties. When his section sergeant was seriously wounded, Sergeant Wilson crossed a fire-swept area to remove him to a place of safety. He then assumed command of the machine gun section, moved it to a new position, and continued to fire on the enemy. The fire delivered under his direction broke up the counterattack and enabled the supported company to take its objective. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
