The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Gunner’s Mate George Butts, United States Navy, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving on board the U.S.S. Signal, Red River, Louisiana, 5 May 1864. Proceeding up the Red River, the U.S.S. Signal engaged a large force of enemy field batteries and sharpshooters, returning their fire until the ship was totally disabled, at which time the white flag was raised. Although entered on the sick list, Gunner’s Mate Butts courageously carried out his duties during the entire engagement.
