The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class David B. Allen (ASN: RA-13343972), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company M, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Tonginang-ni, Korea, when Private Allen’s company had withdrawn from Hill 287 and passed through Company A, 1st Battalion, covering its withdrawal, he volunteered to remain with A Company and assist in the evacuation of the wounded. The enemy attacked while the wounded were being evacuated and remaining in position Private Allen aided in repelling the enemy assault. When he was ordered to leave the hill by the platoon leader, he fought a courageous rear guard action, completely disregarding his personal safety and despite the intense enemy fire, delaying the enemy and allowing a number of wounded soldiers to withdraw and join their unit at the base of the hill. Through his fearless conduct, many wounded were successfully evacuated and one platoon of Company A was able to withdraw from the hill. Private Allen’s extreme gallantry and fortitude reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
