The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Norman M. Alfe (ASN: 0-552910), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company K, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 30 July 1951 in the vicinity of Taeusan, Korea. On this date during an assault on enemy positions, Company K encountered heavy enemy resistance. Lieutenant Alfe, with a gallant demonstration of leadership, moved among his men encouraging them and keeping his platoon well organized. Then, with complete disregard for his personal safety, he assaulted an enemy machine gun emplacement with grenades, completely destroying it while inflicting numerous casualties upon the enemy. By his courageous actions, Lieutenant Alfe so inspired his men and led them in a final assault to repulse the enemy from their positions. During this action Lieutenant Alfe was painfully wounded but refused to leave until all other wounded members of his platoon had been evacuated. The gallantry in action displayed by Lieutenant Alfe reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
