Headquarters, 8th Armored Division, General Orders No. 84 (August 8, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fifth Grade Joseph L. Aldenberfer (ASN: 35030458), United States Army, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 8th Armored Division, on 7 May 1945. As Corporal Aldenberfer was leaving his billets he heard the excited shouting of several children. Rushing to the scene he observed a small child lying face-up in a stream. Without regard for his own safety, and not knowing the depth of the water, he plunged in a carried the child to safety. He then rendered artificial respiration until the child was fully revived. His presence of mind and courage reflect great credit on himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
