Headquarters, 2d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 52 (June 15, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Duane B. Adams (ASN: RA-19308433), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy on 9 August 1950 near Yongsan, Korea. During an attack on enemy positions, Sergeant Adams’ company was pinned down by heavy enemy machine gun and small arms fire. Without regard for his own personal safety, Sergeant Adams loaded his 3.5 rocket launcher, stood in an upright position, and fired on an enemy machine gun nest, knocking it out completely. He reloaded his rocket launcher, and with careful aim knocked out another enemy machine gun. He then observed several enemy troops in a patch of woods and, although under intense enemy machine gun and small arms fire, calmly sighted his rocket launcher and inflicted many casualties on the enemy troops. By his courageous action, enemy fire power was reduced, and his company was able to continue the attack. The intrepid gallantry displayed by Sergeant Adams reflects great credit on himself and is in keeping with the highest standards and traditions of the military service.
