Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Don Walter Adair (ASN: 0-28491), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Commanding Officer of the Heavy Mortar Company, 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy from 13 – 16 February 1951 near Chipyong-ni, Korea. During that period his company was providing supporting mortar fire in defense of the regimental perimeter near Chipyong-ni. During an enemy attack, Captain Adair, with complete disregard for his personal safety, and in the face of intense enemy mortar, artillery and small arms fire, exposed himself constantly in order to inspire and encourage his men. On two separate occasions, while visiting his platoons, enemy artillery and mortar shells landed in the immediate vicinity, and his calm attitude under these hazardous circumstances was an inspiration to his men who remained by their weapons despite the terrific odds against them. The coolness under fire and outstanding leadership displayed by Captain Adair reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
