Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 475 (October 17, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Bernard William Abrams (ASN: 0-50736), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company L, 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 20 May 1951, near Pugan-ni, Korea, the First Platoon, spearheading L Company’s assault on Hill 492, was subjected to a hail of fire and pinned down at the base of the objective. Heedless of the intense fire, Captain Abrams advanced forward of the pinned-down unit and, locating the enemy positions, called for and effectively directed artillery fire upon the enemy enabling the platoon to continue the attack. Having led the platoon to within 30 yards of the hill crest and becoming pinned down again, Captain Abrams called for the Third Platoon to move forward through the First Platoon; however, in advancing, the Third Platoon leader was seriously wounded. Immediately and with complete disregard for his safety, Captain Abrams dashed to the front of the leaderless men and vigorously led them in a successful assault upon the ridge. Upon securing the objective and finding that the company was low on ammunition, he quickly organized a detail and guided it through enemy small arms fire, procuring and returning with the ammunition necessary to retain the position. The gallant leadership, courage, and aggressiveness displayed by Captain Abrams reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
