The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frank A. Abate (ASN: 31291925), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 14 February 1944. Private First Class Abate displayed outstanding devotion to duty and an indomitable courage in braving intense hostile fire to help rescue a wounded comrade from an exposed position. He was a member of a patrol which, attacked by a numerically superior force, had been ordered to withdraw. During the withdrawal, he learned that one of his companions had been hit by enemy bullets and was in danger of being taken by the Japanese. He voluntarily went to this man’s assistance and helped carry him to safety. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Abate, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
