The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Daniel M. Belden (ASN: 0-1313192), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 51st Armored Infantry Battalion, 4th Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 16 November 1944, near Norhange, France. On that date a heavy enemy concentration of artillery fire was falling near a group of buildings. Captain Belden was safely under cover inside a building which was his platoon’s command post. He heard one of his men call for the medics and when he went to investigate he found the man lying on the ground badly wounded. With disregard for his own safety, he personally dressed the man’s wounds and in so doing was wounded himself. Despite the fact that he hurt, he continued to administer first aid and got the man back to a safe position where he could have him evacuated. Not until he was sure this man was taken care of did he have his own wounds dressed. These wounds necessitated his evacuation also. Captain Beldon’s cool thinking and courage under fire were an inspiration to his men and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
